Mission#2 August 12, 1943

Date: Aug 12, 43

Dispatched: 32 Aborts: 5

Mission: Sweep Westhhoofd – Eccloo – Ostend area Field Order: 32/99

Time Up/Down: 10.42 hrs 12.15 hrs Leader: Major Tukey (56th FG)

Claims Air: 00-00-00 Claims Ground: 00-00-00 Lost/Damaged: 00-00

The Group crossed the enemy coast at Westhoofd at 27,500ft at 11:18 hours. It then penetrated to Eccloo and came out at Ostend 27,000 at 11:32 hours. No E/A were seen. Weather: 2-3/10ths cumulus at 5000 ft increasing to 4-4/10ths inland. Visibility: Excellent. Light non-persistent contrails at 29,000ft. A small amount of heavy flak accurate for altitude but behind was encountered over Ostend. Radio interference was moderate at 8,000ft over England, increasing to very intense at altitude over enemy coast rendering reception from controller nearly impossible. Lt. Col. Morris and Maj. Duncan from Group HQ participated.  The 351st FS did not participate. I do not know why Tukey led the mission instead of Morris.
