Mission#14 August 27, 1943 – 353rd Fighter Group

The Group made landfall over Dunkirk, 27,000 ft and continued to Armentiers, then southeast to Montreuil. The bombers were picked up at Hesdin and the Group penetrated to Gravelines at 27,000 ft. Lt Col. McCollom [note his promotion] led the Group with Major Duncan and Lt. Herfurth of the Group HQ participating [Duncan and Hefurth are not listed in the flight plans].

350th: Major Rimerman. T/U 17:51 hrs. T/D 19:47 hrs. Total flight time 1:56 hrs. Two returned early, one for turbo trouble and the other for escort. About ten miles northwest of St Pol, Capt. Venell reported seeing one B-17 fall out of formation. Four parachutes opened and the Fort rolled over and exploded. Lt. Newman saw two bandits deliver a head on attack from thirty degrees to the port side of the bombers. Two balls of fire were shot at the bombers from a range greater than that of machine gun. Lt. Fry, who was on the channel of communication with the bombers, reported that one of the bombers called to watch for planes with rocket guns. Heavy accurate flak was thrown at the bombers in the vicinity of Lille.

Vogel was reported missing in action, but was later confirmed as having been forced down at another station without communication. There were no engagements reported, but two Me109s seen.
